MLB's minimum salary could nearly double. Here's what players would actually keep
The minimum is $780,000 in 2026. The union wants $1.5 million in 2027 and $2.2 million by 2031. After tax in a no-income-tax state, that is a jump from $468,470 to $854,750 — a 82.5% increase in real take-home pay.
The proposal nobody argues about
Almost every headline about these negotiations is about the luxury tax, the salary cap, or free agency. The minimum salary is the quiet line item, and it is the one that affects the most players. Roughly two thirds of the union's membership is pre-arbitration or early arbitration, which means most of the bargaining unit earns at or near the minimum.
The union's May 2026 opening proposal put the minimum at $1.5 million next season and $2.2 million by 2031, alongside a pre-arbitration bonus pool rising from $50 million to $180 million. Owners have not publicly accepted any of it, but the minimum is historically the easiest place to land a compromise.
The gross number is not the number that matters
A minimum-salary player keeps a much larger share of the headline figure than a star does, because progressive federal tax is doing far less work at this income. On $780,000 in Texas the player keeps 60.1%. On $46 million that rate falls to 53.8%.
| Year | Gross | Federal tax | FICA + jock | Agent 5% | Net | Kept |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | $780,000 | −$238,600 | −$33,930 | −$39,000 | $468,470 | 60.1% |
| 2027 | $1,500,000 | −$505,000 | −$65,250 | −$75,000 | $854,750 | 57% |
| 2031 | $2,200,000 | −$764,000 | −$95,700 | −$110,000 | $1,230,300 | 55.9% |
The jump from $780,000 to $1.5 million is worth $386,280 in the player's pocket, not $720,000. The tax system takes about 46.4% of the raise, mostly at the 37% federal bracket plus agent commission on the larger number.
Where the raise goes furthest
Because state tax is a percentage of the whole salary, a small raise in a high-tax market is worth less than the same raise in Texas. Moving a $1.5 million minimum from California to Texas is worth $199,500 a year — roughly a quarter of the raise itself.
That is the quiet reason no-tax clubs have an edge in roster building that has nothing to do with their market size. On a minimum contract, the tax difference between California and Texas is bigger than the difference between the current minimum and the proposed one, divided by three.
What else changes for pre-arbitration players
- Super-2 class expands from 22% to 44%, meaning twice as many players reach arbitration a year early.
- Pre-arbitration bonus pool from $50M to $180M, then +$15M a year — this is money paid to young stars before they are arbitration-eligible, and it is the mechanism that keeps the union's youngest members from being underpaid relative to performance.
- Arbitration awards become guaranteed, so a won case cannot be walked away from.
- Free agency drops to five years for players who turn 30 by 1 November, which lets older players reach the market a year sooner — worth far more than the minimum-salary change for anyone who lasts that long.
