IPL Indian Player Tax 2026: How Rishabh Pant's ₹27 Crore Contract Shrinks to ₹15 Crore After Tax

Rishabh Pant is the highest-paid player in IPL history at ₹27 crore per season, courtesy of Lucknow Super Giants. Cameron Green fetched a record ₹25.20 crore from Kolkata Knight Riders — but due to the BCCI's ₹18 crore overseas cap, he'll only receive ₹18 crore. On paper, Pant earns more than Green. But after India's brutal tax system takes its cut — 30% top rate, 37% surcharge on the tax itself, 4% health and education cess — the gap between them shrinks dramatically.

In fact, after all deductions, Pant keeps roughly ₹15 crore of his ₹27 crore contract. Green, as an overseas player under Section 115BBA, keeps roughly ₹13-14 crore of his ₹18 crore take-home. The $3.6 million gap on paper shrinks to about $1.2 million in reality. Welcome to the IPL's two-tier tax reality.

🇮🇳 The Indian Tax Gauntlet: ₹27 crore gross. 30% base tax = ₹8.1 crore. 37% surcharge on that tax = ₹3 crore. 4% cess = ₹32 lakh. Total tax bill: roughly ₹11.4 crore. Remaining: ₹15.6 crore. Agent fees (5-7%) take another bite. Actual take-home: roughly ₹14-15 crore. That's not a tax rate. That's a tax avalanche.

India's Tax System for High Earners: The Surcharge That Changes Everything

Under India's new tax regime for FY 2026-27, anyone earning above ₹24 lakh faces a 30% base rate. But the real bite comes from the surcharge — an additional tax on the tax itself — that applies to ultra-high earners. For income above ₹5 crore, the surcharge is 37% of the base tax. On top of that, a 4% health and education cess applies to the combined tax and surcharge.

Income (₹)Base Tax RateSurchargeEffective Rate (with Cess)
0 – 4,00,0000%0%
4,00,001 – 8,00,0005%5.2%
8,00,001 – 12,00,00010%10.4%
12,00,001 – 16,00,00015%15.6%
16,00,001 – 20,00,00020%20.8%
20,00,001 – 24,00,00025%26%
Above 24,00,00030%37% (on income >₹5 Cr)~42.7%

The surcharge is the part that catches most players off guard. A 30% base rate sounds manageable — roughly equivalent to the U.S. federal rate. But when the surcharge and cess are applied, the effective rate climbs well above 42%. For Pant, that means nearly ₹12 crore of his ₹27 crore contract disappears before he sees a single rupee.

Indian Players vs. Overseas Players: The Two-Tier Tax System

Indian IPL players are taxed under the standard Indian income tax system — progressive rates, surcharges, and cess. Overseas players fall under Section 115BBA, which imposes a flat 20% tax on income earned by non-resident sportsmen in India. The franchise deducts this as TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) before paying the player.

This creates a fascinating inversion: at very high auction prices, overseas players actually keep a higher percentage of their salary than Indian players. Green's effective tax rate is roughly 22-23% (including surcharge). Pant's is roughly 42-43%. The Indian star earns more in gross, but the overseas star keeps more per rupee earned.

🌏 The Tax Inversion: Indian player earns ₹27 Cr, keeps ~₹15 Cr (55% retention). Overseas player earns ₹18 Cr, keeps ~₹13-14 Cr (72-78% retention). The gap in gross is ₹9 Cr. The gap in net is about ₹1-2 Cr. The Indian tax system is the great equalizer — and the overseas flat tax is the quiet advantage nobody talks about.

Agent Fees: The Unregulated Cost That Compounds the Tax Pain

IPL agents typically charge 5-10% of the player's contract value — far higher than the NBA's 4% cap, the NFL's 3% cap, or MLB's 5% cap. There is no formal regulatory cap on IPL agent fees. The result: a player like Pant, paying roughly 7% to his agent, loses another ₹1.89 crore on top of his ₹11.4 crore tax bill.

For overseas players, agent fees are often split between their home country agent and their Indian representative — adding another layer of complexity to the take-home calculation. The BCCI has discussed regulating agent fees but has not yet implemented formal caps.
